The word "Chakra" simply means "Energy Wheel". So a chakra is like a spinning energy spot on the body. According to some sources there are over 100 chakras on a human body, however, only 7 main chakras are talked about by most authors. Chakras are sometimes referred to as "Wheels of Life",  Vortices", or "Energy Centers".

Please be aware that selecting essential oils for chakras is a subjective endeavor. The lists that are shown here were created using multiple reference sources, a fair amount of research, and a dash of personal experience. Other books or web sites might have slightly different suggestions... For other perspectives please see:

"Spirituality"

This energy center connects us to our consciousness and higher awareness. It allows us to see ourselves in others and have a true understanding of "humanitarian brotherly love". In addition, it is pointed upward toward the sky and connects us to the heavens. Because of this it is known as the chakra which gives us a spiritual connection.

When this chakra is out of balance or closed we may act without thinking and be prone to rigid thinking, prejudices, and unaccepting of new ideas. We may feel depressed, isolated, worried, inefficient, and have negative feelings about ourselves.

The oils listed to the right will help to open and balance the crown chakra.

"Vision"

This energy center helps us with intuition, perception, intellect, imagination, and enlightenment. It helps us "see" and gives us insight. When itís working well, we tend to make wise choices and we are "In Touch" with our own unique life path. We are not influenced by fears and choices of others. We are able to see that the life paths of others are not the same as our own life path. We are able to hear our own inner voice and make choices that are right for our own life.

When this chakra is not working properly we can often have self doubt and/or confusion, rely too much on others, feel without purpose or vision, and have trust issues. We are prone to self-deception. We are motivated by other people's fears and beliefs to act in ways that are not healthy for our own life. This behavior, whether conscious or unconscious is to our own detriment because the life lessons of a close friend, for example, are not the same as our own life lessons. Fear, guilt, regret, and all of the other negative emotions are life draining, unnecessary, and often passed on to people with weak third eye chakras.

The oils listed to the right will help to open and balance the third eye chakra.

"Speech"

This energy center is about communication and self-expression. In a positive sense it enables us to ask for what we want, stand up for ourselves, present ourselves with confidence, and make great first impressions.

A healthy fifth chakra enables a person to live by their own beliefs without guilt or fear of judgment by others. There is no need to force our individual opinions on others. Our speech is gentle, and non-judgmental. Others who try to force their opinions on us are treated with compassion and respect, though not necessarily an influence to our own beliefs. "It is not selfish to live your life as you see fit. It's only selfish to insist that others live their lives as you see fit." - Vernon Howard

Problems here might lead to keeping our thoughts inside, poor self-expression, arguments, fears, an inability to say "No", and anxiety about others thoughts toward us. "Nervous words come from a nervous mind."

A healthy heart center requires self love! When we love ourself, appreciate ourself, and accept ourself, our emotions are reflected back to us from the world around us. We attract others who will love us the same way in which we love ourself.

Blocked energy here could create a state of aloneness, withdrawal, distance, jealousy, envy, neediness, ungratefulness, and possibly feelings of hate. Guarded emotions and a sense of vulnerability often occur.

This energy center is our power core. A strong solar plexus / navel center will provide us with decisive actions, will power, a respectable metabolism, physical balance, and physical strength. In the physical sense, most athletes know that balance and power both originate from the navel area or "core" and "Core Training" is beneficial for just about any sport out there. In a mental sense, a strong power center is essential for self-confidence and determination.

Blocked energy here could create indecisiveness, apathy, lethargy, and laziness. Digestive problems include indigestion, mal-absorption, constipation, and a slow metabolism. Emotionally, negativity, poor self-confidence, and a sense of powerlessness may be present.

A healthy sex drive and a healthy emotional outlook will also be present. Artistic endeavors will likely flourish. Improved fertility will exist.

Unbalanced energy in this area can create a sense of suspicion, insecurity, dullness, frigidity, impotency or over-sexuality. Imbalances related to desire and pleasure may occur such as over-indulgence in anything pleasurable; food, sex, love, alcohol, etc. Any number of physical ailments related to the reproductive organs may exist.

"Survival"

This energy center corresponds to basic survival. In addition, it is pointed down toward the ground and connects us to the earth. A healthy root chakra allows us to feel physically stable in the world. We feel comfortable with our physical body and treat it with respect. We feel secure with our "space". This could mean that we enjoy our home, "home space", our job, "work space", and our general environment, "personal space".

When this chakra is out of balance feelings of worry and instability often follow. Insecurity is a common feeling. "Where is my next paycheck coming from?" or "Where am I going to sleep tonight?" are possible questions. Over-possessiveness of physical things is possible - a strong dislike for sharing or refusal to share. Extreme emotions include paranoia, anger, vengeance, and hatred.
