Ideally all blends should have top, middle, and base notes.
Home
Base Note Oils - Note de Fond
  Least volatile, longest acting,
slowest to absorb into the body,
    slowest to evaporate,
      relaxing and sedating

Middle Note Oils - Note de Coeur
  Balancing and most therapeutic,
these make up the "body" of a blend

Top Note Oils - Note de Tête
  Most volatile, fastest acting,
quickest to absorb into the body,
    quickest to evaporate,
      stimulating and uplifting

Bridges
If an oil is listed as a bridge it means that it can sometimes be more than one note. An oil that can be a base or middle note has a bridge of "Base - Middle". Such an oil would work well in a blend if another base oil and another middle oil were to be used. So, for example, if Cinnamon (Base-Middle) were mixed with say Spikenard (Base) and Melissa (Middle), the oils would likely "bind" well together.
